El Penedés is a wine region located in Catalonia, Spain, known for its vineyards and the production of sparkling wines, especially cava.
Penedes is famous for being the birthplace of cava, a sparkling wine made using the traditional method . Numerous wineries in the region produce high-quality cavas, rivaling other French Champagne regions for example.

We will take the route in a private vehicle, heading to the area with the most cava wineries in Spain; We will start in the town of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia. We will discover the rich history of Cava from Catalonia at the Cava Interpretation Center – CIC Fassina – which will take you into the exciting world of cava , from the origins and history of the most notable characters , to the influence of this drink on culture. and the architecture of a town.
The Penedés region has the ideal conditions for growing grapes. You will learn about the typical varieties of the area and the production process
Then we will go to discover the cava, at Cavas Codorníu:
Codorníu is another emblematic winery in the Penedès. Its winery, known as “La Catedral del Cava,” is an architectural masterpiece. The Codorníu winery is considered the cathedral of Cava. It was founded in 1551 and is located on the outskirts of San Sadurni . It is a beautiful modernist building designed by the architect Puig y Cadafalch and declared a historical-artistic monument. The visitor center is actually like a temple with arches and stained glass. We will travel by electric train through a labyrinth of underground galleries that occupy 200,000 square meters. Finally we will do a tasting of the winery’s cavas. There are different types of cava, classified according to their sugar content and aging time. During the visit we will taste some of the cava variations, such as Brut Nature, the driest cava, with a very low residual sugar content (up to 3 grams per liter), Brut, the most popular cava with a content of residual sugar up to 12 grams per liter. It is versatile and can pair well with a variety of dishes, and finally we will taste a dry one with a residual sugar content of 17 to 32 grams per liter.
Next, we will have time for lunch in a traditional Catalan restaurant (not included)
In the afternoon, we will visit a second Cava Winery, it is more familiar in nature, where we will learn about the harvesting and production process of cava or sparkling wine. We will do a second tasting of the winery’s cavas.
We will return to Barcelona, with the best memories of one of the most important cavas in Spain.
